WVU Dance Team Audition Information and Requirements

Some Liberty Danceline members may wish to continue dancing throughout college and beyond. Here is some information on the WVU Dance Team that may be of interest. Please let Shelley know if you have a desire to dance on the collegiate level so that she can advise you.
























Dance Team

Let's Go Mountaineers! - A familiar cheer known to many throughout the venues of West Virginia University. The West Virginia Dance Team participates with the WVU Cheerleaders to encourage and entice crowd involvement at all men's and women's basketball home games.

Members of the West Virginia Dance Team are representatives of the University as well as leaders among the student body. The purpose of the West Virginia Dance Team is to support intercollegiate athletics and West Virginia University. The support directed by participating in dance and cheer routines to encourage crowd attention on the court, to create an atmosphere with the cheerleaders of excitement and enthusiasm at all men's and women's basketball home games and to serve as public relations ambassadors of intercollegiate athletics and West Virginia University.

Dance Team At-a-Glance

School Year Practices
Practice schedule is as follows: Regular practice begins in September

School Year Work Outs
The team is required to work out together two times weekly. Work outs will be determined by the coach.

Games
All members are required to be at all men's basketball and select women's basketball home games and other select West Virginia University sporting events.

General Tryout Information:

  • All candidates must be a full-time student at West Virginia University in order to be selected as a team member
  • Body piercing and tattoos are not acceptable at tryouts or in uniform if selected as a team member. Remove all piercings and cover all tattoos prior to arrival at tryouts.
  • All tryout sessions are closed to family and other spectators.
  • Day one of tryout will consist of a mandatory informational meeting one week prior to the clinic. Day two consists of learning the material (jazz routine, hip-hop routine and a portion of the fight song) and skills for the final tryout. Day three of tryout, the participant will be judged on all material and skills learned on day two.
  • Clothing should be form fitting during the entire tryout. NO BAGGY SHORTS, TOPS, ETC. Shoes must be worn for the entire process. Foot paws and foot undies are acceptable.
  • The number of members selected for the squad will be determined by the quality of performance of applicants.

    Material Skill Requirements:

  • WVU Fight Song routine
  • Jazz routine
  • Hip-Hop routine
  • Single, double, triple pirouettes (right and left side)
  • Toe touch
  • Hurdle jumps
  • A la seconde turns
  • Coupe jete leap
  • Center and side leaps
  • C-jump
  • Leg hold

    Judging Criteria:

  • Presence and showmanship
  • Dance technique
  • Rhythm, sharpness of moves and fluidity of motion
  • Appearance - "game ready"
  • Memorization and execution of routine and skills
